Temporarily exclusive

• Ogerman has proposed making this wiki exclusive (access only to project members) while the project is in its infancy. I don't yet see his reasoning for this and I am not sure it's a good idea. I think we should allow community involvement from day one. If other people adopt our ideas and go off and do their own thing, all the better.   • Reasoning by Ogerman on this topic: The wiki should be exclusive to members only for the same reason that Open Source projects do not allow world-write access to their CVS/SVN repositories. "Too many cooks spoil the broth," as the old saying goes. (meaning: it would turn to chaos because everyone has a different idea of what the goal is) Because this project is fundamentally about creating a new software architecture, rather than just an implementation, it is imperative that those involved be focused, of like mind, and in close personal communication. That being said, the comment system should be open to the public. (Analogous to allowing the public to submit patches to an open codebase for review). It is unfortunate that MediaWiki (last I checked) does not support per-page or category-based access controls. Some areas of the Wiki would be ideal for non-exclusive editing. For example, ideas for uses of Pelennor do not conflict with discussion of the core architecture.
    • sidenote: It is my belief that many (most?) Open Source projects falter due to mismanaging the "20% parts" of various "80/20 rule" phenomenon -- because they lack clear direction and/or proper leadership. Community processes are highly efficient at working out the "80% parts," but usually need a few benevolent dictators or elected representatives to ensure focus and sane decision making.
  • This does not seem to spoil Wikipedia, however, and currently we are so far below the radar that I doubt there is much vandalism in the works for us. Also, MediaWiki lacks access control mechanisms but it very easy to revert changes and other screw-ups.   • I think this is somewhat new territory for usage of a public wiki. Wikipedia is a compilation of verifiable facts, whereas we purpose to generate creative ideas in a structured way and with a common goal. I'm not concerned about vandalism; I'm concerned that people who don't comprehend the purpose of this project could dilute the value of the Wiki. We don't want to invite a flood of bad ideas that arrive faster than we can moderate them. Nevertheless, this is not likely to become a problem until the project grows larger and attracts more attention. I'm fine with leaving it open for now, though I would recommend turning off anonymous posting. Make people at least register so we know who is who. --Ogerman 12:58, 26 August 2006 (EDT)
